‘Work That Matters’ picnic rocks

Public employee appreciation picnic will become annual event

“A smashing success.” That’s what MEA-MFT President Eric Feaver called the first annual Work That Matters Public Employee Appreciation Picnic, held September 6 on the capitol lawn in Helena.

Over 800 public employees from state, local, and federal agencies attended the free lunch-time event, sponsored by MEA-MFT and the Montana Public Employees Association.

Clear skies, colorful tents, and live music by the Helena Parlor Pickers welcomed everyone to the festive picnic that was held to honor the important contributions of Montana’s public employees.

A noble calling
“Public employees absolutely do work that matters. They protect our children, help our sick, keep our water clean, and so much more,” Feaver said.

“Public employment is a noble calling. It’s time that we elevated public employment to the status it deserves. Thanks to everyone who came to celebrate with us. If you missed it, never fear; we plan to make this an annual event.”

The picnic was the latest Work That Matters event. Work That Matters is an ongoing MEA-MFT and MPEA campaign to inform Montanans about the valuable work public employees do.

Work That Matters postcards and newspaper ads feature Montana public employees talking about the work they do and why it matters to Montanans.

“We are always looking for nominations for Work That Matters postcard people. There are so many great public employees out there, and we want to spread the good news,” said Sanna Porte, MEA-MFT communications director.

“Contact me with your suggestions. And don’t be afraid to nominate yourself.” Porte can be reached at MEA-MFT at sporte@mea-mft.org or 442-4250.
