What you should know about
the Employee Free Choice Act

August 2009

IT’S TIME TO RESTORE WORKERS' FREEDOM to form unions and bargain for a better life.

Action alert: please contact senators Max Baucus and Jon Tester!

America's working people are struggling to get by, and America’s middle class is disappearing.

But when workers try to form unions and bargain for a better life, corporations often use coercion and harassment to stop them.

Congress is now considering the Employee Free Choice Act. The act would restore workers’ freedom to decide for themselves — without employer intimidation — whether to form unions.

Big business spends hundreds of millions a year to hire anti-union consultants to intimidate workers from pargicipating in or showing support for union campaigns.

Recent polls show that 58% of non-union workers would join a union if they could. But they won't vote for a union if they fear losing their jobs.

Polling shows the overwhelming majority of Americans support the idea of the Employee Free Choice Act. Read more.

Big corporations are trying to kill the Employee Free Choice Act through a $200 million smear campaign.

Here's the truth about the act:
The Employee Free Choice Act is a simple amendment to federal labor law that would do the following:

  • Stiffen penalties for companies that intimidate, harass, or fire workers who want to form unions.

  • Allow workers to form their union when a majority signs cards indicating that’s what they desire.

  • Require arbitration when a company refuses to bargain a first contract.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Please tell Montana's members of Congress to SUPPORT the Employee Free Choice Act.
