Amazing Gary Branae
State Senator Gary Branae of Billings is one of MEA-MFT's 16 members in the 2009 Montana Legislature. Gary has been retired for nine years after teaching 27 years at Billings Senior High, three years at Red Lodge High School, and three years in Washington State.
He taught math for 16 years at BSHS and served as a counselor his last 11 years
What I do, and why it matters: Working with high school students was a very rewarding experience. Whether I was teaching academics, counseling, or just relating to them, I was always impressed by their energy, enthusiasm, excitement about life, and their potential. I felt that it mattered because our youth are our future. I do not fear for our future because I believe youth of today will be more than capable of “running our world.” I have been privileged to have had a part in preparing them to do that.
Best kind of day on the job: The best kind of day is one when you can go to bed feeling that you have taken advantage of the opportunities provided you, and that a positive difference has been made.
Why I belong to MEA-MFT: By working together we can always be more successful in accomplishing our goals. The organization also provides its members the chance to take advantage of educational as well as social opportunities.
What I do for fun: I really enjoy the outdoors, whether it is hiking, cross country skiing, or just taking a long walk.
Family/community involvement: I am married to Linda, also a retired educator, and I have two married daughters and three grandchildren. I am an active member of American Lutheran Church and serve on the boards of two community agencies, COR Enterprises and The Family Tree Center.
Good movie I’ve seen lately: I just recently saw the movie Valkyrie. It was outstanding in that it not only portrayed the evil in our world, but also showed that there are people who are willing to fight for what is right.
Thanks, Gary, for doing Work That Matters for Montana's people!
