4 bad bills: take action!

Mar. 25 - Four BAD bills wait legislative action, maybe today. Please contact legislators!

BAD NEWS: SB 328 (Lewis) – to require PERS new hires be in a defined contribution plan. SB 328 passed the Senate on 3d reading today. The bill is now on its way to the House. MEA-MFT will eventually stop it.

HB 397 (Knox) – to provide tuition tax credits for private, sectarian, and home school educational expenses.

Action needed: Contact all members of House Tax.  Urge them to table HB 397. 406-444-4800 or use legislative email system.

GOOD NEWS: HB 603 ( Blasdel) – to establish a parallel universe of PRIVATE charter schools was tabled in House Appropriations. Close vote. We fully expect a blasting motion – a motion to take the bill from the committee and place it directly on 2d reading in the House.  This motion requires 60 votes.

Action needed: We might be able to stop this bill right now. Please email or call  House members and urge them to vote NO on any motion to blast SB 603 out of committee. Whatever happens, it will be close.  Your help is essential. Thank you!

SB 315 (Ripley) – to redefine good cause and truncate due process in the teacher tenure statutes. Very bad bill for teachers.

Action needed: Contact all members of House Education. Urge them once again to table SB 315. 406-444-4800 or use legislative email system.
