NEA Foundation grant deadline Feb. 1

Have you applied for your NEA Foundation grant yet? The deadline for the next round of applications is February 1, 2013.


These grants area vailable to educators in public k-12 schools and higher education.


The NEA Foundation funds and supports public educator solutions to improve student performance with two categories of grants: Student Achievement Grants for initiatives to improve academic achievement, and Learning & Leadership Grants for high-quality professional development activities.


The Foundation awards about 150 of these grants every year. On average, each grant impacts the learning of about 200 students.


2013 deadlines for applications are Feb. 1, June 1, and Oct. 15. Application forms and an instructional video can be found on the NEA Foundation’s Grants to Educators page.


MEA-MFT member Daisy Rooks recently completed her $2,000 NEA Foundation grant project researching on alternative ways to enter the teaching profession.


The NEA Foundation reports the following about this project: 


Dr. Daisy Rooks, an assistant professor of sociology at the University of MT, has completed a $2,000 Learning and Leadership Grant from the NEA Foundation to examine individuals who have taken alternative pathways into the teaching profession.


Rooks conducted interviews with 60 participants, staff and critics of Teach for America, the largest alternative pathway program in the United States.


Her project, “Gaining a Leg Up or Becoming an Agent of Change?” focused on the experiences and motivations of individuals participating in the program. She also conducted 30 hours of participation observation in a pre-service summer teacher training institute.
