Montana’s largest labor union endorses Tim Fox for attorney general
MEA-MFT, Montana’s largest labor union, has announced that its Committee On Political Education (COPE) has endorsed Tim Fox for re-election as Montana’s attorney general in the 2016 election.
MEA-MFT is 18,000 Montana employees working in state and local government, prek-12 public schools, Montana university system, Head Start, and private sector health care.
The 34 members of MEA-MFT’s Committee On Political Education (COPE) live and work across the state and represent all of MEA-MFT’s membership groups. They include Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. COPE members endorsed Fox after an extensive candidate interview.
“COPE members are pleased with Tim Fox’s record of good relations with public employee union members represented by the Montana Public Employees Association at the Department of Justice,” said MEA-MFT President Eric Feaver. “And he has established an open-door policy with our union and has invited us to come visit with him on the issues whenever we wish. Going forward into a likely turbulent political future, that’s important to us.
“We are also grateful that Fox is defending Montana’s open primary elections. In doing so, he is standing up to leaders in his own party who want to close our primaries. Closed primaries would infringe on Montanans’ historic freedom to vote for the candidates of their choice.”
In addition, Feaver said, “Fox’s office worked with us to resolve our Teachers’ and Public Employees’ Retirement System GABA lawsuits without compelling us to take our case to the Montana Supreme Court. Yes, this is, and always will be, a big deal to us.”
MEA-MFT represents 18,000 k-12 teachers and school support staff, Head Start employees, state and county employees, university faculty, and private-sector health care providers working in communities all across Montana. MEA-MFT is a merged affiliate of the National Education Association and American Federation of Teachers and is the largest affiliate of the Montana State AFL-CIO.
